Abstract

The invention comprises nicotinoyl-7-hydroxyethyl theophylline and dinicotinoylmorphine, and their preparation by reacting the appropriate hydroxy compound with nicotinic acid in the presence of a dehydrating agent, for example phosphorus oxychloride, or with a functional derivative of nicotinic acid, for example nicotinic acid anhydride or nicotinic acid halide (in the form of the hydrohalide salt). In examples, nicotinoyl 7-hydroxy-theophylline is prepared by reacting 7-hydroxytheophylline with (1) nicotinic acid anhydride and (2) nicotinic acid chloride-hydrochloride in pyridine; dinicotinoylmorphine is obtained by reacting anhydrous morphine hydrochloride with (3) nicotinic acid anhydride, (4) nicotinic acid chloride-hydrochloride in pyridine and (5) nicotinic acid in pyridine in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride.
