Abstract
Distilled and polymer-free di-ketene is polymerized in a liquid organic solvent containing a hydroxyl group in the presence of an alkaline catalyst at a temperature within the range 0 DEG to 60 DEG C. while cooling to maintain the reaction temperature, then either cooling below the reaction temperature and/or neutralizing the catalyst and finally mechanically separating the polymer from the suspension. Specified solvents are methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, isopropanol, glycol, glycerine, cyclohexanol, phenol and glycollic acid butyl ester while the catalyst may be a metal hydroxide or alcoholate or salt of a weak acid or a nitrogenous base, e.g. sodium acetate, potassium hydroxide, pyridine, sodium hydracetate, sodium acetoacetic ester, sodium methylate, potassium acetate, magnesium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, and sodium carbonate.
