Abstract

a -Acetotetronic acids are produced by treating an acetoacetic ester of the formula <FORM:0700186/IV(b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 represent H, aryl, aralkyl, alicyclic, lower alkyl or 2- alkylene groups forming part of a ring, and R3 is lower alkyl up to hexyl, with a Claisen-type catalyst, thus removing an alcohol group. The products have the formula <FORM:0700186/IV(b)/2> The required acetoacetic esters of hydroxy esters may be obtained by the action of diketene on carboxylic esters having a OH group a - to the CO OH group. In examples the acetoacetate of ethyl lactate, obtained by the action of diketene on ethyl lactate, heated with sodium in a solvent gives g -methyl-a -acetyltetronic acid, the acetoacetate of methyl mandelate gives g -phenyl-a -acetotetronic acid, and the acetoacetate of methyl a -hydroxyisobutyrate gives g -g -dimethyl-a -acetotetronic acid. The sodium may be replaced generally by potassium, sodium or potassium methylate, ethylate, propylate, butylate, amylate or hexylate triphenyl methyl sodium, sodamide, and sodium hydride. Aryl groups in position R1 or R2 may be substituted. The acetoacetic esters of the following hydroxy acids are also specified as starting materials: glycollic, isopropylmandelic atrolactic, benzilic, leusic, a -OH-hydrocinnamic, cyclohexylglycollic, dibenzylglycollic, and others.
