933,088. Compacting machine and feeding mechanism. BENDIX CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1962 [Feb. 13, 1961], No. 2087/62. Class 87(2). Brake linings are moulded by placing resin coated asbestos fibres in a bin B, rotating shafts 66 and 60, which have pins 68, 62 in the form of a helix, to advance the material to a hopper H, which is defined by plates 42, 46, 38 and 40 and the surfaces of rolls 10, 12, and rotating the rolls 10, 12 in opposite directions at the same peripheral speed to force the material out through the aperture A in a continuous strip. The thickness of the strip is determined by adjusting the pass between the rolls 10, 12 and the density of the material is controlled by reciprocating rods 74, or rotating helices (see Fig. 4, not shown) which compress the loose material against the grooved surface of roll 10. The lower roll 12 comprises a drum 20 with a hoop 26 slidably mounted on its outer surface to enable rolls 10 of different widths to be used. The position of the hoop is adjusted by bolts 34 (see Fig. 3, not shown).
