Abstract
Alkaline earth, especially barium, titanate ceramic dielectrics are produced by firing the green ceramic body in an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. air at 2300 DEG -2800 DEG F. until the dielectric constant is in the range 8000-10000 and then heating to 2300-2800 DEG F. for 10-80 minutes in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. hydrogen. Ceramic bodies thus produced have dielectric constants in excess of 25000. For the production of a capacitor circuit element, electrodes are formed on the reduced ceramic body by the application of metallic electrode compositions, e.g. a silver glaze. The heated dielectric bodies are then fired in an oxidative atmosphere at 1400 DEG -1500 DEG F. for 1/2 -10 minutes when a controlled degree of reoxidation takes place. According to an example, a ceramic composition containing at least 50% by weight of barium titanate and the rest made up of strontium titanate and calcium zirconate was fired in a ceramic kiln on a 20 hour cycle with a maximum temperature of 2500 DEG F. maintained for 2 hours, then reduced for 1/2 hour at a temperature of 2400 DEG F. and reoxidized for one minute at a temperature of 1450 DEG F. Specification 664,370 is referred to.ALSO:Alkaline earth, especially barium, titanate ceramic dielectrics are produced by firing the green ceramic body in an oxidising atmosphere e.g. air at 2300-2800 DEG F until the dielectric constant is in the range 8000-10000 and then heating to 2300-2800 DEG F for 10-80 minutes in a reducing atmosphere e.g. hydrogen. Ceramic bodies thus produced have dielectric constants in excess of 25000. For the production of a capacitor circuit element, electrodes are formed on a reduced ceramic disc by the application of metallic electrode compositions e.g. a silver glaze. The heated dielectric discs are then fired in an oxidative atmosphere at 1400-1500 DEG F for 1/2 -10 minutes when a controlled degree of reoxidation takes place. According to an example, a ceramic composition containing p at least 50% by weight of barium titanate and the rest made up of strontium titanate and calcium zirconate was fired in a ceramic kiln on a 20 hour cycle with a maximum temperature of 2500 DEG F maintained for 2 hours, then reduced for 1/2 hour at a temperature of 2400 DEG F and reoxidized for one minute at a temperature of 1450 DEG F. An epoxy resin may be applied after cooling. Specification 664,370 is referred to.
