Abstract
A ceramic dielectric for capacitors is prepared by making powdered barium titanate of high purity into a form, firing the form in a reducing atmosphere at a temperature between 1330 DEG C. and p 1550 DEG C. until all the barium titanate is transformed to its hexagonal polymorph, cooling the form over a temperature range of 1330 DEG C. to 1000 DEG C. for an hour or less and then firing the form in an oxidising atmosphere for one to five hours at 1000 DEG C. to 650 DEG C. This forms a barrier layer dielectric since during the oxidation process the granules of barium titanate (diameter of of about 1 micron) become surrounded by a very thin (about 100 ) barrier layer, the material as such being substantially electrically conductive but in the form of grains mutually isolated by thin insulating films.ALSO:A method of manufacturing an inter granular barrier layer ceramic dielectric for capacitors includes the steps of making powdered barium titanate of high purity into a form, firing the form in a reducing atmosphere at a temperature between 1330 DEG C. and 1550 DEG C. until all the barium titanate is transformed to its hexagonal polymorph cooling the form over a temperature range of approximately 1330 DEG C. to 1000 DEG C. for approximately an hour or less and then firing the form in an oxidising atmosphere for one to five hours at a temperature between 1000 DEG C. and 650 DEG C. This forms a barrier layer dielectric since during the oxidation process the granules of barium titanate (diameter of about 1 micron) become surrounded by a very thin (about 100 ) barrier layer, the material as such being substantially electrically conductive but in the form of grains mutually isolated by thin insulating films.
