A dispenser for pulverulent material, such as powdered soap, comprises a housing 1 adapted to receive a soap container 17 and having a discharge opening 26, a removable apertured plate 8 defining a discharge chamber 22 below it and a valve plunger 4 having several measuring notches 5 in its outer surface. When the valve is raised by pressing on a reduced stem 20, the notches 5 rise above the plate 8 and fill with soap while the soap supplied to the discharge chamber on the previous downward movement of the valve discharges past the stem 20. The valve is additionally supported in a spider 10, is pressed downwardly by a spring 11 and may carry a wire 14 for breaking up any agglomerated soap. The container may have a tight fit directly in the housing or in an interchangeable bushing 2 or the housing or bushing may have screw-threads into which the container may be screwed. As shown in Fig. 15, the lower stem of the valve may be of dog-leg shape so as to be clear of the descending soap and the upper stem 13c is then of non-circular section fitting in a corresponding aperture in the spider 10 so that the valve is always assembled with the dog leg at the rear. In order to direct the soap clear of the dog leg, the notches 5 may converge forwardly towards each other. The mounting bracket 15 may be apertured so that it can be held between the container or bushing and the housing or the bracket may be integral with or fixable to the housing.
