An adjustable bed comprises a fixed frame 1, a vertically movable frame 7 and a normally horizontal mattress supporting structure 8 movable as a unit in a vertical direction, the structure 8 comprising a plurality of sections 9, 11, 12 and 13 which include a foot section 11, 12 and a head section 9, each of which is angularly movable relative to an intermediate horizontal section 13 which is rigidly carried by the frame 7. Actuating arms 55h, 55# are pivotally carried by the head 9 and foot parts 11, 12 respectively of the structure 8 and may be engaged in blocks 56h, 56f on the fixed frame 1 so that the movable sections 11, 12 and/or 9 may be moved into an angular position relative to a preselected horizontal plane of the section 13. The movable frame 7 is raised and lowered by means of links 19, 20 which are provided with collars 18a, 18b movable towards and away from each other by means of shafts 14 driven by an electric motor 45. Adjustable control means consisting of cam members 57 (Figs. 6 and 7) carried by shafts 58 on the frame 7 are provided so that the arms 55 may be engaged in the blocks 56 when the frames 7, 8 have been raised to a sufficient height above the fixed frame 1. Movement of the cam 57 is effected by weighted handles 59 which have lost motion connections with the shafts 58.
