Abstract
Surface active esters are prepared by reacting, at 10 DEG to 40 DEG C., epoxidised products of higher molecular weight unsaturated compounds having an epoxy oxygen content up to 3% by weight and at least one carbon chain which has from 10 to 26 carbon atoms, with a polybasic inorganic acid or anhydride, and, if desired, neutralisation of the reaction product. The carbon chains are uninterrupted straight or branched chains of carbon atoms which may be in the form of, or form part of, a ring system. Preferred chains are those containing 12-24 carbon atoms. Chains of 10 to 14 carbon atoms provide products with wetting action and those of 12 to 20 carbon atoms yield products with washing and cleaning action. The higher molecular weight unsaturated compounds include hydrocarbons such as dodecene, octadecene and squalene; alcohols such as oleyl, and other mono or poly unsaturated alcohols, acids such as monoor poly-basic unsaturated carboxylic acids and esters and amides thereof, especially naturally occurring glycerides such as soya bean oil, cotton seed oil, rape seed oil, linseed oil, castor oil, sunflower seed oil, olive oil, neat's foot oil, sperm oil, herring oil, cod oil, shark liver oil, whale oil or the interesterification products thereof, in addition esters of mono or polyhydric alcohols of the aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic series, such as n-butyl, t-amyl, 2 ethylhexyl, octadecyl, cyclohexyl, methylcyclohexyl, naphthyl and benzyl alcohols, also with ethylene glycol, 1,2 propylene glycol, butanediol-1,4, dodecanediol-1,12, pentaerythritol and polyalkylene glycols, the amides may be based on fatty acid amides derived from ammonia, dimethylamine, dodecylamine, oleylamine, ethylenediamine, cyclohexylamine or benzylamine. Preferred starting epoxides have an epoxide oxygen content of 0.5 to 3%. The reaction may be carried out in an inert diluent at a preferred temperature range of 15-35 DEG C. using as the polybasic inorganic acid boric acid, sulphuric acid, sulphur trioxide, pyridinesulphuric acid adducts, oleum, phosphoric acid, phosphorus pentoxide, or anhydrous phosphoric acids. Examples illustrate the reaction of various epoxidised oils and epoxidised decyl oleate, with sulphuric and phosphoric acids. The epoxidation (partial) of some of the starting materials with hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid is described.
