Abstract
932,086. Resilient mountings. METALASTIK Ltd. Aug. 22, 1960 [Aug. 21, 1959], No. 28734/59. Class 108(3). A chevron-shaped mounting unit for supporting, e.g. a corner of an engine, generator, or machinery 10 and which has a direction of maximum stiffness inclined to the vertical direction of loading L comprises rubber, or rubberlike, blocks 115, 215 which are accommodated between the corresponding legs of a base member 12 which rests upon a foundation member 14 and a support member 14 the blocks 115 being made stiffer, e.g. by incorporating one or more interleaves such as 20 to which the parts of the blocks are bonded. It may be arranged that the ratio of the maximum to minimum stiffness, due to compression Csl and shear Ss2 in the direction P and compression Cs2 and shear Ssl in the direction Q, is, e.g. 2À4. By suitable selection of the stiffness ratio the units can be focused on an effective point of suspension arranged at a preferred position, such as O, Fig. 4, with respect to the centre of gravity x of the machine. In a modification, Fig. 5, pairs respectively of greater and lesser stiffness blocks 115, 215 are arranged on a square pyramid 12. In order to ensure that the machinery will be supported horizontally the blocks 215 which become compressed to a greater extent are, in the unassembled condition, of greater thickness.
