Abstract
Polymerization, e.g. of ethylene, at high pressure may be effected in the intermediate passages of a reactor comprising a plurality of tubular reaction sections secured together by one or more coupling elements which each have a respective through-bore, wherein each reaction section comprises three concentric tubes defining an inner passage, an intermediate passage and an outer passage, which passages are not interconnected, and wherein each through-bore connects the respective intermediate passages of two adjacent reaction sections, while passing a heat exchange medium through the inner and outer passages of the reactor. The reactor preferably incorporates an automatic temperature control system. Apparatus suitable for the polymerization is described and illustrated.
