In a suction dredging system the suspension drawn up through a suction pipe 2 is discharged into an inclined tube washer 4 feed with water by a separate pump 10 and in this washer stones and gravel pass down against the current of this water through the washer into a storage space 8 whilst light and fine materials are carried up the washer to a grid 12 that allows of the removal of floating materials before the light and fine materials are separated in a battery of cyclone separators 15.
