931,878. Making tubes; rolling. TITANIUM METALS CORPORATION OF AMERICA Dec. 15, 1961 [Dec. 27, 1960], No. 44986/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A metal working tool having a fixed member and a member which is relatively rotatable thereto for flow-turning a workpiece is characterized in that said rotatable member comprises an inner frame which is adjustably mounted and locked in the fixed member constituting an outer frame and a working ring freely rotatably mounted in said inner frame, the inner edge of said working ring being adapted to flow-turn a workpiece against which said edge is pressed during relative rotation of said tool and said workpiece. The tool comprises an outer frame 11 accommodating adjustable inner frames 16 provided with freely rotatable working rings 30 mounted in ball-bearing assemblies 32. In a modification, the outer frame is of annular construction and is provided with eccentric bores 42, 44 for accommodating the working rings 60, Fig. 5, said rings being mounted on ball-bearings housed in frames 46 having eccentric bores to enable the working rings to be adjusted relatively to each other. Flat cover rings 66 are bolted to each side of the outer frame to maintain the inner frames, bearings and working rings in their adjusted positions. In operation, the tool 39 is mounted on the face-plate 76 of the head stock 74 of a lathe, Fig. 6. A mandrel 84 held on the tail stock chuck 80 passes through the tool and the face plate 76. A tubular workpiece 92 mounted on the mandrel is gripped at one end by a member 90 mounted on a reciprocable-carriage 86 the other end of the workpiece being placed at the mouth of the working ring in the tool 39. The carriage is moved towards the tool which is rotated at the same time and the tubular workpiece is reduced in wall thickness and elongated in a twostep working process as shown in Fig. 7. Alternatively, the tool is clamped and the tubular blank and the mandrel rotated. The working edge of the rings may be blunt, rounded, flattened, angled or stepped. The wall thickness of the product tube may be varied over its length by appropriate intermittent or continuous adjustment of the working ring settings. By employing a mandrel with a reduced diameter portion a reductionin inside diameter of part of the tube may be produced.
