Abstract

1389042 Chucks BLACK & DECKER MFG CO 10 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 41723/74 Divided out of 1389041 Heading B3B A tool chuck comprises a body 13 having a plurality of passages 25 inclined to a central axis of the body and converging towards one end, a respective jaw 23 slidably supported in each passage and having gear teeth 29 formed thereon, an annular ring gear 26 rotatably supported on the body and having internal gear teeth engageable with the gear teeth 29 of the jaws 23 for moving each jaw longitudinally of its corresponding passage, interengaging means 43, 47 for preventing axial movement of the annular ring gear relative to the body, and a cylindrical cover 44 supported on the annular ring gear and extending away from said one end of the body and wherein that end of the cover 44 which is supported by the annular ring gear is formed with a turned under double thickness edge 51. The cylindrical cover 49 is made from relatively thin, drawn, sheet metal and turned under edge 51 provides sufficient rigidity to enable an interference fit to be maintained on a tapered surface 50 on the annular ring gear 26. The said ring gear 26 is made in two halves and held together by the cover 49.
