Relative rotation between the ball and disc takes place during rolling. Several passes of the tool may be made in order to reduce or taper the cylindrical wall. In the above embodiment the disc is stationary and the tool rotated. The tool is suitable for rolling discs with relatively small bores, and incorporates a ring of balls held between two tapered discs 26 and 28. By moving the discs axially relative to one another, the balls are adjusted radially (Fig. 5, not shown), this adjustment being possible either before a rolling pass or during such a pass. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 1, a tool 116 carrying a single ball is adjustably carried on a cross slide 104 which is vertically movable on columns 106 and 108. The disc, which may be of relatively large diameter, is supported on a rotatable table 102. The tool is mounted on a head 126, Fig. 2, in such a way that the ball 148 is urged against the workpiece disc 114. Reaction forces are passed from the ball, through the head 126, and to a reaction roller 152 acting on the opposite side of the workpiece support 112. A pair of rollers may be used in place of just one, and a hand wheel 156 is provided for adjusting the or both rollers. The ball is held in a cage 150 between a pair of tapered discs 128 and 130, the cage being keyed to the spindle of the tool whereas the discs are freely rotatably supported. A lubricant may be applied between the ball and workpiece to reduce friction.
