Abstract

931,309. Printing-plates. R. C. BLACKMORE, and W. HARVEY. April 6, 1962 [Aug. 29, 1961; March 22, 1962], Nos. 31097/61 and 11084/62. Class 41. [Also in Group XVI] An electrotype printing plate is formed on a flat or curved mould e.g. by electro-deposition of copper, and the negative side of the separated formed plate is then treated with a small amount of a low-melting metal sufficient only to fill the sharp depressions, and the plate is then backed-up by a heavy plating of a metal e.g. tin/lead alloy which may also contain cadmium or antimony. As low melting alloy 50: 50 tin and lead may be used, the m.p. lying preferably 65-200 ‹ C. A lead-tin-bismuth-cadmium alloy melting at 80‹ C. may also be used. By this process distortion of the flat or curved plate by hot metal is largely avoided, and removal of material backing up "white areas " at intermediate processing stages is unnecessary. In examples, a laminated plastic mould mounted on flat glass sheet is silvered and plated with copper to form a shell 0.02 inch thick. The separated shell has laid on the negative side, tin/lead foil 0.005 inch thick which is heated to 200‹, e.g. by radiation, when sharp depressions are filled. The printing face is then protected with a coating of shellac and suspended in bath containing tin, lead and fluoboric acid, to form a plate 0.06 inch thick, and this side bonded to aluminium giving a total thickness of 0.166 inch. The low melting alloy may be applied before or after forming a curved printing plate, and then plated with lead-tin.
