Abstract

930,734. Cathode-ray tube protection circuits. PYE Ltd. June 8, 1961 [June 14, 1960], No. 20842/60. Class 40 (7). In the absence of one or more magnetic scanning fields the beam of a C.R.T. is cut-off, the fields being sensed by search coils or magneto-resistive or magneto-voltaic elements. During normal operation, the signals induced in search coils L1, L2 and L3, L4 by the horizontal and vertical scanning fields respectively are rectified at X1, X2 and applied respectively to overcome the negative biases applied to the suppressor and control grids of pentode V1 by potentiometers P2, P1, respectively. The pentode is thus conducting and relay RL operated to maintain the C.R.T. beam. If either scanning field fails, the associated grid of valve V1 becomes negative, the valve cuts-off, and relay RL is de-energized to switch-off the beam. In this embodiment the inductance L5 is provided to cause ringing in the circuit feeding XI and transformer T1 is so designed as to cause ringing in the other input circuit so that the circuit may function on both forward and reverse directions of scan. In another embodiment the pentode is replaced by a pair of series-connected triodes and the horizontal search-coil output is fed to a pair of diodes, one of which acts as a D.C. restorer, so that the arrangement can accept positive and negative pulses.
