Abstract

1,146,180. Cathode-ray tube circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 Dec., 1966 [31 Dec., 1965], No. 58345/66. Heading H4T. The average beam current of a cathode-ray tube 1 is limited to a predetermined maximum value by means of an RC circuit 15, 16, connected between earth and the negative pole of the EHT supply, and so proportioned that, when the beam current reaches such maximum value, the voltage developed across the circuit (of negative polarity with respect to earth) causes diode 17 to conduct so that the control grid 3 then follows such voltage and prevents further increase in beam current. With this arrangement overloading of the EHT source and of the normal supply stage, particularly important in the case of battery operated portable television receivers, is prevented with introducing image distortion as in known current limiting proposals. The brightness of the display is controlled by means 14 which, during normal operation biases grid 3 to a potential more negative than the potential across circuit 15, 16 so that diode 17 is non-conductive.
