Abstract

High molecular weight polyurethanes are prepared by reacting a compound of formula RR1C(NO2).CH2CH2CHOH.CH2OH where R and R1 are hydrogen, alkyl or nitro (see Group IV(b)), with a diisocyanate, such as 3,3-dinitro-1,5-pentane diisocyanate. The products are of use as propellants (see Group XXI).ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula RR1C(NO2).CH2CH2CHOH.CH2OH, where R and R1 are hydrogen or alkyl or nitro radicals, and their production by reducing the corresponding a -keto-alcohol in an acid medium, preferably with sodium borohydride. The keto-alcohols may be prepared by the reaction of RR1CHNO2 with hydroxymethyl vinyl ketone.
