946,819. Cellular polyurethanes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 18, 1959 [Jan. 23, 1959], No. 2544/59. Headings C3C and C3R. Cellular polyurethanes are obtained by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a hydroxyl ended polyether in the presence of a tertiary amine in excess of the amount required to render the polyether acid free, the amine being free from isocyanate reactive groups, and the reaction being carried out without applying external heat, to give a product containing free isocyanate groups which is then reacted with water. Lists of suitable compounds are given. The amine can be dissolved in the polyether before adding the polyisocyanate. Optional ingredients of the polyurethanes are nonionic surfactants, salts of sulphuric acid derivatives of high molecular weight organic compounds, silicone oils, fluorinated hydrocarbons, from stabilized e.g. ethyl cellulose, plasticizers and fire proofers some being exemplified. Acetyl chloride may also be included. Specification 733,624 is referred to.
