Abstract

Esters of vitamin A acid are produced by treating vitamin A acid with a di- (methyl or ethyl) sulphate and an alkaline compound chosen from hydroxides, carbonates, and bicarbonates of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals in a hydrocarbon solvent and recovering the resultant methyl or ethyl ester from the solvent. Specified alkalis are sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, sodium carbamate, potassium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and potassium bicarbonate. The solvent may be petroleum ether, petroleum benzine, benzene, toluene, xylene, n. hexane, or cyclohexane. The sulphate and the alkali are preferably used in considerable molecular excess. The ester solution is dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and then the pure alkyl ester obtained by partial evaporation of the solvent and crystallisation.
