Abstract
<PICT:0930203/III/1> <PICT:0930203/III/2> <PICT:0930203/III/3> A jig to fit over the upper foot part of a sock or stocking for masking portions thereof while other portions are impregnated with rubber or flexible plastic, comprises an annular upper portion 1, a heel portion 2, 3, and a toe portion 4 spaced from one another to provide gaps there between and connected by outwardly extending arms 10, 11, 12, 7, the portions being arranged to lie on the surface of a sock supported on a last. As shown the jig comprises two spaced heel parts, and vamp portions 5, 6, spaced from the toe and annular portions and connected thereto by arms 12, 7, 8, 9. The annular portion converges upwardly to a width a which is less than the width of the corresponding part of the foot. The sock is dusted on the inside with zinc stearate, and fitted on a metal last which may be heated to 100 DEG C. The jig is fitted over the sock and the plastic material, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber latex, or p.v.c. paste composition, applied, e.g. by brushing to the gaps, to form bands c, d, e, f, g, h, k. The sole portion of the sock is coated by dipping, preferably after the jig has been removed, and the sock heated to 170 DEG C.
