Abstract

In a method of making a shoe at least part of the upper thereof is formed from a stiffener material, and part of the stiffener material is activated whereby to render it stiffer than the remainder. A length of double-raised woven cotton cloth is impregnated with introcellulose, dried, then coated on one side with an aqueous composition containing natural rubber latex or synthetic rubber or resin, whiting and conventional dispersing and vulcanizing ingredients to give a barrier coating, and dried. A fibrous filler, e.g. flock may be included. A synthetic rubber adhesive comprising neoprene, a resin and chlorinated rubber is spread on to the dried barrier coating, and a room temperature isocyanate curing agent is then added. Nylon flock fibres are sprinkled from a vibrating metal sieve over the adhesive while still wet, and the material dried. Pieces the shape of shoe uppers are then cut from the material. The uppers are assembled with linings on their unflocked sides and assembled on lasts. They are activated at their toe and heel ends with a volatile solvent to activate the nitrocellulose impregnant, the uppers are then pulled over, and after completing the lasting and allowing time for the material to dry, the lasts are slipped and the shoes completed.
