930,079. Hand wheels. H. P. M. QUILLERY. Nov. 3, 1959 [Nov. 7, 1958; June 23, 1959; Sept. 28, 1959], No. 37213/59. Class 80 (4). A dished vehicle steering wheel is capable of absorbing the kinetic energy of the driver in the event of a collision by arranging one or more curved arms 3 so as not to be in a radial plane or planes and to connect with the rim 1 of the wheel substantially tangentially, so that, under collision pressure, the arm or arms are stressed in torsion. The other end or ends of the arms may be attached axially or orthogonally of the steering column. Various configurations are shown and described which may be made of bar or tube stock and are welded or brazed together and may be covered with plastics material. The arm or arms may be continuous with the whole or part of the rim.
