968,367. Steering wheels; protecting guards. DAIMLEB-BENZ A.G. Dec. 19, 1962 [Dec. 30, 1961], No. 48000/62. Headings B7B, B7H and B7J. A steering-wheel assembly has a central impact surface 20<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, in the form of a padded plate 20, located well above the rim 15 of the wheel 13 which is connected by spokes 16 to the wheel hub 14 secured on a steering spindle 12 within a stering column 11, the plate 20 closing the upper end of a deformable energy absorbing hollow body 17 connected at its lower end to the hub 14. The body 17 may be cylindrical or in the form of a truncatedconical pleated bellows. The body may have a member slidable on a member fixed to the hub. In another embodiment the impact plate is connected by spokes to the wheel rim so that the wheel moves with the plate when the latter is impacted. A sleeve on the plate then telescopes in a sleeve fixed to the steering spindle. The spokes are preferably deformable. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 897,507.
