Abstract

A shock absorbing steering column support designed to protect the driver of a vehicle in the event of an impact, has a sleeve (10) around the steering column, supporting it, attached to the bodywork (11) behind the steering wheel (7) by two spaced apart sheets (12, 13) which have a pattern of slots (14) through them, so that they will deform when the steering column is forced forwards. The column itself incorporating a joint (5) which permits this movement. Straps (12a, 13a) between the spaced sheets form the attachments between the stering column and the bodywork. The two sheets are approximately rectangular, with one side parallel to the steering column.
