Abstract

Energy absorbing bumber for an automobile has an energy absorbing element in the form of a strip of metal folded to a U-shape. One leg of the U is brazed to a cross beam (12) forming part of the undersurface of the vehicle. The other leg (11) is brazed to a cross-beam (13) which is rigidly attached to the bumber. When the bumber is subjected to an impact, the force is transmitted to the cross-beam and deforms the U shaped strip in such a way that the curved end (111) is unrolled on its upper side whilst the lower leg (11) is rolled up so that the centre of the radius (R1) moves to the left. The lower leg (14) of the U tears away from the brazed joint with the cross-beam.
