Abstract

1322232 Collapsible steering columns FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 21 Aug 1970 40332/70 Heading B7H A motor vehicle has clutch and brake pedals 26, 25 which are mounted on a shaft 24 carried by a support 20 fixed to the vehicle body by flanges 27. A collapsible steering shaft 30 carries a wheel 31. When the vehicle driver impacts the wheel 31, with a force exceeding a certain value, the support 20 deforms and collapses to absorb part of the energy of the impact. The support 20 comprises a base section 21, a corrugated section 22, and a steering shaft support section 23 secured to the upper dash panel (not shown) by a break away bracket, e.g., as described in Specification 1,241,148. The shaft 30 may comprise rigid upper and lower telescopic sections or a rigid upper and a flexible cable as the lower part. The section 22 may be formed from a single sheet of metal Fig. 5 (not shown) or be fabricated from separate parts welded together to form an inverted channel Fig. 6 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown) the support (10) has a rear wall (16) provided with an aperture (15) in front of an impact disc (17) on a steering shaft (13). The disc (17) engages the rear wall (16) upon impact of the driver against the steering wheel to - collapse the support (10) and so absorb the energy of impact.
