Abstract

The vehicle steering wheel has selected points deformed in order to permit collapse under a frontal force only, without affecting its rigidity for normal use. This absorbs the energy of impact and reduces the risk of injury to a driver. The frame of the steering wheel can be solid or tubular and the selected points are distributed over the spokes (3) and the rim (2). Each point (6, 7, 8) is deformed by cold pressing, or hot using electrodes, the metal being flattened to a thinner section parallel to the steering column axis. The displaced metal spreads sideways, increasing the width perpendicular to this axis.
