A safety device for detecting a change in the composition of air in a room containing a gas fire or cooker comprises a thermocouple 1 mounted with its operative tip just touching the periphery or the blue core 6 of a burner flame. Any change in the amount or the composition of the combustion air for the flame results in a change in the shape of the flame which causes a signal to be transmitted by the thermocouple via a conductor 3 to a gas regulating device and/or a warning device. The thermocouple 1 projects adjustably through the jet 10 of a burner body 2 provided with a mixing tube 4 in which gas from a nozzle 5 is entrained with air from the enclosure in which the burner is situated.
