Abstract

929,863. Processing radio-active waste. R. ALBERTI. Jan. 18, 1960 [Jan. 19, 1959; July 8, 1959], No. 1774/60. Class 39 (4). Liquid radioactive waste is led in an upward direction into a mass including finely divided hydraulically setting absorption material. The absorption material may be aluminous, sorel, or Portland cement mixed with a granular water - insoluble chemically inert material of substantially uniform size, for example quartz sand, gravel, slags, plastics, or radiation shielding material such as barite, iron or lead ores, or iron oxides. The liquid penetrates the solid material rapidly and uniformly without stirring. After setting, the solid block, together with the container, is buried underground or sunk in the sea. As shown in Fig. 1, a metal cylinder 1 contains the absorbent mixture 5. Liquid waste introduced through funnel 3 flows down tube 2 and through holes 4 into the absorbent. In another apparatus, Fig. 2 (not shown), a number of inlet tubes are provided. Specification 871,336 is referred to.
