Abstract
929,853. Air cushion vehicles. A. P. PEDRICK. June 26, 1961, No. 23115/61. Class 4. An air cushion vehicle in which a supporting cushion is generated and maintained by forward movement of the vehicle is constructed so that its base area may be increased by the outward projection from the main body or hull of a plurality of members, the outer ends of which are connected to a member constituting a side wall or plate extending down from the ends of the projectable members towards the surface over which the vehicle is moving so as to form a means of limiting the outflow of air from the supporting cushion in a direction generally transverse to the line of movement of the craft. The vehicle comprises a base structure J supporting cargo-carrying decks A and B which support at each side a power plant G capable of orientation about a transverse axis to provide a degree of upthrust. A drop-keel D is provided and housings are formed in structure J for a plurality of members K shown extended in Fig. 2 and connected at their outer extremities by sidewalls L forming housings for longitudinal extendable plate members M. These may be arranged to come in close proximity with the surface over which the vehicle is operating or they may carry ski members N on their lower extremities. As shown in Fig. 1 the members K are of aerofoil section to provide lift when immersed in water and in the air. Specifications 575,516 and 743,893 are referred to.
