Abstract

In the production of a carbon article by carbonizing a carbonizable binder in admixture with carbon, a carbonizable impregnant in an article of carbon, or a carbonizable cement joining together two articles of carbon, the binder, impregant, or cement comprises furfuryl alcohol treated with a phosphoruscontaining compound before or after the formation of the uncarbonixed furfuryl alcoholcontaining article. The furfuryl alcohol may be treated with 7% of phosphoric acid. Specifications 901,847, 901,848 and 929,463 are referred to.ALSO:In the production of a carbon article of improved oxidation resistance at high temperatures by carbonizing a carbonizable binder in admixture with carbon, or a carbonizable impregnant in an article of carbon, or a carbonizable cement joining together two articles of carbon, the binder impregnant or cement comprises furfuryl alcohol treated with a phosphorus-containing compound before or after the formation of the uncarbonized furfuryl alcohol-containing article, the quantity of phosphorus-containing compound being such that the carbonized article contains 0.05-0.25% of phosphorus compound calculated as H3PO4. The furfuryl alcohol may be treated with 7% of phosphoric acid. Specifications 901,847, 901,848 and 929,463 are referred to.
