A transporter for fitting and removing aircraft engines comprises a chassis 2 on which are pivoted, about axes 3, four levers 4 each carrying a wheel 5 and each connected to an hydraulic ram 9 pivotally mounted on the chassis for raising the chassis relative to the wheels, the rams on each side of the chassis being supported on a common pivot 10, Fig. 5. The chassis 2 is provided with a pair of transverse girders along each of which a shoe 29 carrying a pair of rollers 33 is movable by a screw-and-nut mechanism which is manually operated by a crank 30. The rollers 33 support a pair of curved cradles 34 which are interconnected by a pair of horizontal girders 35 along which a trolley (not shown) supporting the aircraft engine can be moved. The cradles can be tilted on the rollers 33 by a screw - and - nut mechanism operated by a crank 36. Locking devices for hydraulic jacks.-The piston-rod 11, Fig. 5, of each ram 9 is provided with a quick-pitch screw thread 12 which meshes with a rotatable screw collar 13 mounted between two thrust bearings 14 in a sleeve 15 secured to the ram cylinder. A pawl 17 engages ratchet teeth 16 on the collar and permits rotation of the collar due to extension of the ram but prevents rotation in the opposite direction. The four pawls may be disengaged simultaneously from the teeth of the corresponding collars by means of Bowden cables 24 connected between the pawls and a lever 21 pivoted on axis 10. A stop 26 is provided to hold the lever 21 in the dotted position against the action of the pawl springs when the pawls are disengaged.
