In apparatus for cooling and freezing out condensible impurities from crude gas prior to rectification in a column 6 and comprising in series (a) switchable groups of series arranged heat exchangers 5a, 5c, 5e and 5b, 5d, 5# having their secondary passages 4a .. 4f traversed by crude gas and their primary passages 14a . . .14f traversed by coolant gas e.g. effluent from the column 6 of which a portion traverses primary passages 19, 20. 21 of a second group of exchangers 22, 23, 24 in series (b) a compressor 30 and (c) the secondary passages 32, 34, 36 of the second group of exchangers having located between them expansion turbines 33, 35 passages 51, 52 connect points between each pair of crude gas heat exchangers to points between each two second heat exchangers. The passages 51, 52 serve to supply coolant to the primary passages of crude gas exchangers having been defrosted and thus requiring cooling from a relatively high temperature.
