Abstract
929,002. Thermionic cathodes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 20, 1960 [June 23, 1959], No. 21554/60. Class 39 (1). A cathode comprises a non-metallic emissive layer 5 activated by barium, with or without strontium, separated from a layer 3, delivering barium and including an oxidic compound, by a gauze or perforated foil 4 of nickel which does not contain Al, W, Si or Mg, and which is permeable to alkaline-earth metals, and which acts as the current supply for layer 5. The layer delivering barium may comprise an oxidic compound mixed with TiH 2 . As shown, layer 3 of barium-strontium oxide is contained in a recess in the end of a cylinder 1 of nickel which may contain admixtures such as Al, Si, W, Mg which can isolate barium from barium-strontium oxide. Layer 5 is of barium-strontium oxide, 70 microns thick, or may be of SrO, CaO or barium zirconate.
