Abstract
928,955. Piezo-electric crystals; filters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 7, 1961 [Nov. 8, 1960], No. 38333/60. Class 40 (8). A filter comprises a number of piezo-electric thickness-shear resonators having the same fundamental frequency but having plating patterns which differ in the marginal regions of the crystals whereby the inharmonic overtone frequencies are different. The four crystals shown are bevelled quartz discs of AT or BT cut and have identical central electrodes 1 of deposited gold. The lead-off strips 2, 4, 7, 8 differ, however, either in shape or thickness. In addition, small plated areas 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 may be deposited near the edges of certain of the crystal plates. These areas are not connected to the electrodes. The resonators may be arranged as shunt elements in a low-pass LC ladder filter to provide an attenuation notch at a desired frequency. In the band-pass filter of Fig. 3, the pairs of resonators Q5, Q7 have the same fundamental frequency which differs slightly from the resonant frequency of the pair Q6, Q8. The two arms of the filter are connected by a 1: 1 auto-transformer. The plating patterns on pairs of resonators having identical resonant frequencies are made slightly different in order to obtain non-coincident overtones.
