Abstract
1,209,808. Electromechanical filters. GENERAL ELECTRIC and ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 30 Oct., 1969 [19 Nov.; 1968], No. 54791/68. Heading H3U. A band-pass filter in which unwanted responses in the stop band are highly attenuated comprises two quartz slabs 1, 2 each having three resonators, vibrating in thickness shear mode, formed by pairs of electrodes 3 . . . 5 and 6 . . . 8, respectively, deposited on opposite faces of the slabs. The slabs 1, 2 have different thicknesses so as to have different resonant frequencies; however, the fundamental resonant frequency of all six resonators is the same since different plateback values are chosen for the two slabs, these different values being obtained by giving different thicknesses to the electrodes of the two slabs. " Plateback " is the reduction of the resonant frequency of the slab due to the electrode masses. The resonators of each slab are mechanically connected in series by the slab material situated between the three resonators, the two groups of three resonators being electrically connected in series. The slabs 1, 2 are mounted on insulating support frames 10, 11 separated by a beryllium-copper screen 12. Copper strips 13 on the frames 10, 11 are connected through strips 9 to the respective electrodes. Thus, one electrode of pair 3 is connected to input lead 14, the other electrode of this pair being connected via a tab 15 to the earthed screen 12; both electrodes of pair 4 are connected via tabs 16, 17 to the screen 12; one electrode of pair 5 is connected via tab 18 to screen 12, the other electrode of this pair being connected via tab 19 to one end of a capacitor 20 the other end of which is connected to a lug 21 of the screen. Similarly, one electrode of pair 6 is connected via a tab 22 to one end of the capacitor 20, the other electrode of this pair being connected via a tab (not shown) to the screen 12; both electrodes of pair 7 are connected to the screen; one electrode of pair 8 is connected to the screen and the other connected to output lead 23. The screen 12 is attached to a base 24 having connection pins 25, 26, the whole unit being enclosed in a can (not shown).
