Abstract
1287002 Electromechanical filters WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 27 Oct 1969 [30 Oct 1968] 52467/69 Heading H3U A bandpass filter, Fig. 2, comprises a quartz crystal wafer 18 having resonators formed by a pair of input electrodes 10, 12 and a pair of output electrodes 14, 16. The resonators vibrate in the thickness shear mode and are " controlled coupled", i.e. the spacing between the electrode pairs is great enough to ensure that coupling between the resonator is less than a certain amount. Preferably the coupling between the resonators is small enough to ensure that their antiresonant frequencies fall outside the passband (Figs. 9-11, not shown). The pass-band may be varied by varying the mass of the electrodes. However, this method also varies the mid-band frequency and to overcome this difficulty fine adjustment of the pass-band is obtained by varying the mass of the wafer 18 in the space situated between the resonators. Thus, a deposition 24 of the required mass is plated in the wafer, this mass causing only a slight variation in the mid-band frequency. In another embodiment, Fig. 20, utilizing four resonators, fine adjustment of the pass-band is obtained by removing material from the wafer 82 in the form of recesses 84 and also by adding a deposition 86.
