Abstract
631,772. Impedance networks. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21775. Convention date, March 30, 1943. [Class 40 (viii)] [Also in Group XL (c)] A piezo-electric filter comprising an AT cut quartz plate has electrodes arranged and connected as shown in Figs. 8 or 10. The Specification explains in detail with the aid of graphs that this arrangement will vibrate in an odd but not an even shear mode so that troublesome responses due to the coupling between even shear and odd flexural modes is minimized. Coupling between the odd shear and even flexural modes may in addition be minimized by spacing the electrodes from the ends of the plate and if necessary arranging further earthed electrodes in at least part of the resulting marginal portion to remove the piezo-electric stress from these portions. These earthed electrodes should, however, be narrow otherwise excitation of the even order shear mode will result. Fig. 12 shows one of each type of crystal element arranged in cascade in a narrow band filter comprising in addition, input and output low-pass half section impedance transforming networks L1, C1, and resistance pads 32, 33 for minimizing changes in response due to temperature variation. The capacitors C2 represent the self-capacitances of the element. With this arrangement spurious responses of each section are suppressed by the other. The first crystal has a resonance peak below the passband and the second crystal a resonance peak above the pass-band.
