Abstract

A slub filament is produced by extruding molten polyolefin through an orifice at a shear rate above the critical shear rate, thereby producing turbulence and a serrated monofilament, and stretching the serrated filament. Polypropylene melt at a temperature of 250 DEG C. may be extruded through a head having six orifices at a speed of 8 m./min. The entry to each orifice may be tapered and each orifice may have a diameter of 0.02 inch. Each filament may be stretched 300-1,200% while at a temperature of 100 DEG C. by a take-up godet. Polyethylene filaments may be similarly produced using orifices having a diameter of 90 DEG 100 DEG C., and stretching 500-1,200% while at a temperature of 90 DEG -100 DEG C. using a take-up godet.
