Abstract

652,005. Filaments united by adhesives. COURTAULDS, Ltd., FORD, C., and FOTHERGILL, F. July 15, 1948, No. 19019. [Class 120(iii)] [Also in Group VIII] A composite ribbon is formed by forming into a flat tape without twisting, a bundle of parallel, untwisted continuous filaments of synthetic high polymeric material and bonding together the filaments in the tape throughout their length whilst maintaining their parallel, untwisted condition, by treating the tape with a bonding agent in liquid form and consolidating the thus treated tape into the desired ribbon by solidifying the bonding agent. The filaments may be viscose or cuprammonium cellulose, cellulose acetate, or vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and the bonding agent may be cellulose acetate or cellulose - acetate - butyrate; a cellulose ether; polyvinyl acetate; polyvinyl vinyl acetal; polyvinyl butyral; polyvinyl alcohol; proteins, e.g. gelatin or casein; gums or shellac. Mixtures of bonding agent, e.g. dimethyl phthalate or tricresyl may contain a plasticizer or softening agent. e.g. dimethyl phthalate or trocresyl phthalate. The bonding agent may be in solution in a low boiling solvent, e.g. acetone, methylene chloride or in water, or may be applied in the form of a hot melt, or as a powder which is subsequently heated, for example, by heated rollers. Either the filaments or the bonding agent or both may be coloured and other effects may be produced by incorporating mother of pearl or aluminium powder in either the filaments or bonding agent. The bonding operation may be effected by passing the tape through the nip of a pair of rollers, the tape having been treated with the liquid prior to reaching the rollers, or the liquid may be applied in the nip by partly immersing the lower roller in a bath of the liquid. In a further apparatus, the tape 1 is passed through a metal tube 3 containing a bonding agent, entering the tube through a hole 5 in a rubber bung 6, passing over tension bars 7 and 8 to form a flat tape, over a horizontal guide bar 11 and leaving the tube through a slot 12 comprising a die. The tape 'is then dried by infra-red heating and passes through calender rolls prior to being wound as a cheese Specification 539,797, [Group VIII], is referred to.
