Abstract

1,242,346. Producing filamentary materials by fibrillation. CELANESE CORP. 28 Feb., 1969 [1 March, 1968], No. 10818/69. Addition to 1,165,934. Heading B5B. The process of the parent Specification (wherein a blend of a molten filament-forming synthetic thermoplastic polymer and a minor proportion of a blowing agent which at the extrusion temperature is itself or evolves, a gas is extruded in film form, the film is drawn as it leaves the extrusion die and the drawing is continued while the film is maintained at a temperature above the glass transition temperature of the polymer until fibrillation occurs and the fibrillated film is solidified) is modified in that the blend is subdivided as it is extruded, so that it issues from the extruder as a plurality of ribbons, each of which has a width to thickness ratio of from 200 : 1 to 20,000 : 1, and the ribbons are simultaneously drawn to fibrillation, and solidified. The subdivision of the melt as it is extruded can be effected by using an extrusion die provided with dividers which can be fixed, e.g. formed integrally with the die lips, or adjustably mounted within or against the die lips. The die itself can be a slot die such as would normally extrude a flat film or a die provided with an annular outlet such as would normally produce a tubular film. In an example, a mixture of a polypropylene having a melt index of 6À5 and an inherent viscosity of 2À2 in decalin at 135‹ C. and 1% of azodicarbonamide is melt extruded through a die-head maintained at 240‹ C. and having a slot type extrusion orifice 6 inches long and 0À020 inch wide, the slot being provided with polymer stream dividers 1¢ inches apart. The extruded ribbons are cooled at a controlled rate to below their softening temperature by means of jets of air at 20‹ C. and 90 p.s.i.g. pressure directed into the upper and lower surfaces of the ribbons by means of quench tubes. The solidified ribbons are passed over a driven first roll whereby a fibrillated product is obtained which is then drawn by passage over a shoe maintained at 125‹ C. followed by a second roll driven at three times the peripheral speed of the first roll.
