Abstract
1,003,996. Stubbed polyolefine monofilaments. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 14, 1964 [Sept. 20, 1963], No. 37049/63. Heading B5B. In a process for the production of stable, nodular, polyolefine monofilaments, molten polyolefine is extruded through a spinneret at a shear stress sufficient to cause irregular extrusion and to produce filaments of helical form, the extruded filaments are cooled and stretched, and the nodular filaments so produced are heattreated. Heat treatment may be carried out, suitably at a temperature 10-100‹ C. below the melting point of the polymer, when the filaments are in a relaxed state or when maintained at constant length. Heat treatment may be effected by means of an air oven. The polyolefine may be, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene. For isolactic polypropylene, the spinning conditions are such that the shear stress in the polymer prior to issuing from the spinneret orifice exceeds 10<SP>7</SP> dynes per sq. cm. The filaments cut to short lengths including more than one nodule, may be used as reinforcing material for plaster or resinous articles. Specification 968,699 is referred to.
