[Also in Group XXXV] A voltage indicating the speed of an electric motor, such as the armature voltage, is applied across potentiometer 5 and, when this voltage exceeds a predetermined value, Zener diodes 4 break down to energize a control winding CC of magnetic amplifier 3. This varies the potential at the star-point of a three-phase transformer 2 to reduce the voltage provided by thyratrons 1 for the motor field excitation. The armature of the motor may be connected to an A.C. supply through thyratrons controlled in accordance with the difference between a reference voltage and a speed-responsive voltage. The thyratrons 1 may be replaced by saturable reactors with amplifiers, and valve or transistor amplifiers may be substituted for the magnetic amplifier 3. Specification 879,928 is referred to.
