Abstract
928,408. Laminates. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. March 10, 1960 [March 23, 1959], No. 10054/59. Class 140. High density polythene sheeting is secured to surfaces of metal, wood, concrete &c., e.g. as lining for tanks and other chemical apparatus, by an intermediate layer of natural rubber, or synthetic rubber such as polybutadiene, polybutadiene/styrene, or rubbery copolymers of ethylene with other olefins. The rubber preferably contains a peroxy curing agent such as dicumyl peroxide, which may also be included in the polythene layer. The rubber surface not in contact with the polythene may be coated with rubber containing no, or little, curing agent. To protect the rubber from ultraviolet light the polythene layer may contain an opaque pigment, or two layers, one of which is so pigmented, may be provided; alternatively the rubber may contain a pigment other than carbon black, e.g. china clay or calcium carbonate. Examples are given of the lining of a steel tank with a polythene-natural rubber laminate using toluene solutions of compounded polyehloroprene, which may be preceded by a similar solution of chlorinated rubber, as priming coats, and toluene solutions of compounded rubber as adhesives, the rubber layer in one case being laminated, on the side remote from the polythene, with a second rubber layer containing no peroxide curing compound. The Provisional Specification states that the invention may be applied to low-density polythene and other similar olefins. Specifications 865,806 and 903,295 are referred to.
