Abstract
Charge pellets containing metallic oxide and carbonaceous reducing agent, for use in smelting metals, are produced by mixing the oxide with an hydraulic binder, e.g. Portland or alumina p cement such as made from basic furnace slag, and a bituminous binder, such as crude baking coal preferably ground to powder so that at least 50% of the grains pass a 200 Tyler mesh and containing 1-3% pitch, forming the mixture into pellets with water, and allowing to harden without heating. The cement may comprise 3-10% of the mixture. The pellets may be subsequently preheated and prereduced at 500-1000 DEG C., e.g. in one or more shaft furnaces or a rotary kiln, to coke the bituminous binder. The hot preheated pellets may then be transferred to an electric smelting furnace for final reduction.
