927,989. Extruding plastic materials. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. Feb. 20, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1961], No. 6465/62. Class 87(2). In a process for the continuous homogeneous incorporation of substances, such as colouring matter or stabilizers, which are to be finely dispersed in melts of plastics by premixing a small portion of the powdered or granular plastic with the substance to be finely dispersed therein, the mixture is supplied in the cold state to an extruder 1, the mixture being melted in a melting zone and the melt mixed in a mixing zone adjacent to the melting zone in the extruder 1, mixing the resultant melt in a second mixing zone with the bulk of the plastic introduced in a molten condition and discharging the complete mixture thus obtained from the extruder. The extruder 1 houses a worm screw having a rear part 6 in the melting zone and a front part 7 in the second mixing zone. The melting zone is fed from a rear feed hopper 2, and the second mixing zone by a front feed hopper 3. Immediately prior to the front feed hopper 3 is a flow retarding element 8 which has the same external diameter as the screw thread and forms a narrow gap of 0À01 to 0À2 m.m. between its outer surface and the inner surface of the extruder housing.
