The fish-gutting machine described in Specification 880,176 incorporates a timing mechanism controlling the movements of the bellyslitting knife ensuring that whatever the length of the fish being dressed the knife is moved clear as soon as it reaches the vent of the fish. The lateral displacement of feelers 40, Fig. 1 by the fish causes the engagement of a clutch 55, Fig. 5, and rotation of a shaft 85 so that a pawl 81 on an arm 83 on the shaft is moved from a position A to a position B, Fig. 7, i.e. through a distance which is dependant on the length of the fish, and is held in that position when the clutch disengages by a pawl 88 engaging teeth 87. A cam 92 rotating at twice the speed of the pawl-carrying arm 83 then pushes the pawl 81 to position C, i.e. into engagement with ratchet teeth 78, and sector 77 is thereby turned and its shaft 36 rotated allowing the knife 15 to drop down from the abutment 35 on the shaft end (i.e. move from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that in Fig. 1) at the precise moment that it reaches the vent of the fish. Cam 92 then trips the pawl 88 off the teeth 87, position D in Fig. 7a, and pushes past the pawl 81, position E, spring 106 returning arm 83 to its initial position.
