Abstract

927,640. Exhaust silencers. W. S. EVERETT. Feb. 11, 1960, No. 4958/60. Class 7(2). A device for attenuating noises from fluid flowing through an exhaust passage comprises an elongated casing 14 having a closure 12 through which extends an inlet pipe 10, a first header 19 provided within the casing and a second header 30 provided at the other end of the casing, and a plurality of perforated spaced pipes 24, 25, 26 which extend through both headers. The second header comprises an outwardly concave dish-shaped reflector for directing any issuing noise in a single direction and the pipes 24, 25, 26 are surrounded by sound absorbent material 31, e.g. fibre glass, copper chips or steel chips disposed in the casing between the headers. Preferably the header 30 is parabolic in shape and has an inside diameter of the order of magnitude of the predominant wavelength of the exhaust noise. The ratio of the length to diameter of the tubes 24, 25, 26 is preferably within the limits of 4 to 1 and 6 to 1. The outlet area of the device is at least twice the inlet area but preferably three to seven times. A shield 16 is centrally supported in the casing by legs 17.
